Spot sees a rainbow by Eric Hill
A solid lift the flap board book for little people will find a home as they eagerly read this with older people who can guide them through the five double pages, covered with bright lively colours, focusing of course on a favourite fictional dog, Spot.
Spot and his Gran are off to the park, spotting all the different colours they can find. Along the right hand margin of each double page is a colour chart, showing the seven colours in the rainbow, adding some of the things seen on each page. At the bottom of each are questions to focus the child’s attention on the page as it is read to them. The first page has the orange and red squares with labels, which will initiate further squeals of delight as other objects can be found. Another wondrous moment will be found when the flap is lifted to reveal something fresh. Young children will love the colours, the excitement of lifting the flap, the focus on Spot and his Gran along with the excursion of going to the park.
When it begins to rain, Gran pulls out an umbrella and Spot and his new friends dance in the rain, while by this time the colours on the right hand margin have been filled with the things they have seen, including a blue hippo and a green crocodile.
And the last flap to be lifted shows a rainbow.
The book shows a child and grandmother going to the park with all of its environmental detail, while the book encourages children to think about the colours they see, answering the questions posed and lifting the flaps as an added sense of excitement.
